چکیده
The paper, "Utilizing Link Characterization for Improving the Performance of Aerial Wireless Sensor Networks" by Nadeem Ahmed, Salil S. Kanhere, and Sanjay Jha, was mistakenly omitted from the June 2012 JSAC issue (Vol. 30, No. 5) on Communications Challenges and Dynamics for Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles and appears instead in the August 2013 JSAC issue (Vol. 31, No. 7). In this paper, the authors consider how to make effective use of the communications links in a multihop aerial wireless sensor network. To better understand the behavior of such links, the authors performed an extensive set of outdoor experiments using aerial nodes based on the TelosB sensor platform. The data collected show that both antenna orientation and multi-path fading due to ground reflections can have a large impact on the quality of the links. Using their insights into link behavior gained from their empirical studies, the authors propose the use of topology control (in which a transmitter attempts to improve link quality by reorienting its antenna according to the intended receiver's known location) and opportunistic transmission (in which a mobile transmitter that predicts fading at the intended receiver delays transmissions until it reaches a location in which ground reflections are likely to cause less interference). These 'link-aware' algorithms have been evaluated in simulated networks based on scenarios expected to be encountered in practice; simulation results show that when added to a network these algorithms can provide significant performance improvements.

EDITOR’S NOTE Geopersia is published biannually by the College of Science, University of Tehran, Iran. The College of Science published “Journal of Science”, which covered all fields of basic science, from 1968 to 2010. It was then decided that the College’s journals should be more specialized, and hence publication of Geopersia was launched. Geopersia aims to publish peer-reviewed original...
